Characteristics

Valais Blacknose sheep are a naturally docile, friendly breed of sheep, unlike many other breeds, making them such perfect pets.

They get their name from their beautiful black noses, with the black colour extending up the face to the eyes and surrounding them.
The ears are totally black and there are black markings on the fronts of their knees and on their hocks in an otherwise white coat. Ewes also have black under-tail spots which make it easy for sexing! Both sexes have spiral-shaped twisted horns, the rams heavier and spiralling down and the ewes lighter and tending to point out. These distinct markings, coupled with their remarkable horns, give them a striking (not to mention highly appealing) look.

They are dubbed the “cutest sheep in the world” and its easy to see why!

Rams can range from 80 – 130kg with a height of 75 -83cm and ewes range from 70 – 90kg and 72 – 78 cm in height.

They are known for lambing easily and are able to produce rapidly growing lambs year-round. In Switzerland they have dual use, both for meat and producing coarse carpet grade wool. Elsewhere around the world, including New Zealand, they are largely bred as pets.
